Manchester United extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to six points with a comfortable 2-0 win over Middlesbrough at the Riverside.

Recently-crowned PFA Player of the Year Ryan Giggs and substitute Park Ji-Sung were on target in each half as the champions took a giant stride towards retaining a third successive title.

Four matches remain this season for Alex Ferguson's side, who have now played the same number of games as second-placed Liverpool, who face Newcastle on Sunday.

While it was an entirely satisfactory afternoon on Teesside for United, it was a gloomy day for the hosts, whose top flight status is still perilously hanging by a thread. 

Fast-starting Chelsea dismiss Fulham

Nicolas Anelka scored in the first minute as Chelsea beat Fulham 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League's West London derby.

The Frenchman's strike set the tone for a frantic opening as Erik Nevland equalised in the fourth minute, before Florent Malouda restored Chelsea's lead before 10 minutes were up.

Thereafter the home side seized control with an impressive display and Didier Drogba made the game safe with a clinical 53rd-minute effort.

Chelsea manager Guus Hiddink had been expected to rest several players for this game, sandwiched between the two legs of a Champions League semi-final against Barcelona. 

Arsenal's Young Gunners too good for Portsmouth

Nicklas Bendtner bagged a brace as Arsenal's second string beat 10-man Portsmouth 3-0 at Fratton Park to strengthen the Gunners' grip on fourth place in the Premier League.

The Dane scored twice in the first half before young Mexican Carlos Vela added a third and Pompey had Noe Pamarot sent off for a professional foul.

The result sent Arsenal 13 points clear of fifth placed Aston Villa, who play Hull City on Monday.

Defeat for Pompey saw Paul Hart's side stay in 14th, seven points above the drop zone, but still close enough to continue feeling the heat with four games remaining. 

Manchester City heap pressure on Rovers

Manchester City swept aside Blackburn Rovers 3-1 at Eastlands to leave Sam Allardyce's team still very much embroiled in the Premier League relegation scrap.

Felipe Caicedo tapped home from close range to put City ahead on 26 minutes, and Robinho doubled their advantage with a sumptuous finish from 18 yards soon after.

Elano made it 3-0 from the penalty spot on the stroke of half-time, but substitute Keith Andrews grabbed a consolation for Rovers on 66 minutes - hooking in the rebound after El-Hadji Diouf had a penalty saved by Shay Given.

The defeat leaves Blackburn just six points clear of the relegation zone - and 18th-placed Newcastle have a game in hand to potentially cut that gap to three. 

Spurs put West Brom on brink

West Brom's hopes of Premier League survival were almost completely wiped out following a 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur courtesy of a goal from Jermaine Jenas.

The defeat at White Hart Lane now leaves them six points from safety, with fellow strugglers Newcastle United and Hull City both playing on Sunday.

Jenas's goal puts Spurs level on points with Fulham and Manchester City, who are all now chasing seventh-placed West Ham for that final Europa League place. The Hammers are one point ahead all three clubs with 48.
